What is idea validation?

Idea validation is the process of proving that a problem is painful enough, frequent enough, and findable enough that strangers will pay you to solve it — before you build the full product. It is not customer interviews alone, not landing pages alone, and not 'getting feedback' from friends and mentors.

How long should validation take?

Two to six weeks for a software or service idea, run intensively. Anything longer usually means you are avoiding the binary question (will strangers pay?) by hiding inside softer activities (more interviews, more research, more design). The point of validation is to get to a clear yes/no fast enough to either start building with conviction or kill the idea cheaply.

Do customer interviews count as validation?

Interviews validate problems, not solutions. They are necessary but never sufficient. People will tell you they love your idea and then never buy it — this is called the Mom Test problem. Pair every round of interviews with a behavioural test: a paid pre-order, a deposit, a paid pilot, a signed LOI. Spoken interest without committed behaviour is noise.

What is the build-trap?

Building the product before proving anyone wants it. The build feels like progress, ships dopamine, and lets the founder avoid the harder work of selling. The result is a polished v1 with no customers, six months gone, and the founder emotionally unable to kill it because of sunk cost.

What are real validation signals?

Strangers paying (not free signups). Strangers paying upfront before the product exists. Repeat purchase from the same paying customer. Unsolicited referral from a paying customer. Customers angry when you try to sunset the prototype. These are the five signals that compound. Everything else — likes, signups, LinkedIn engagement, mentor enthusiasm — is supporting evidence at best.
